Gophers Win, 3-1 over Wildcats

The No. 7 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over Northwestern, tonight in Evanston, Ill. The Golden Gophers (25-3, 14-3 in Big Ten) won 25-22, 29-27, fell in the third, 13-25 and won the fourth, 25-19.
Stephanie Samedy had a match-best 24 kills when she hit .447 for the match. Molly Lohman added 13 kills (hit .375) and a team-best six blocks, while Alexis Hart had 12 kills. Dalianliz Rosado had a match-best 17 digs, while Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 45 assists. As a team, the Wildcats outhit the Gophers, .331 to .254, held a 60-55 kill lead and an 11-9 block advantage.
Minnesota plays at Illinois, tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
Set Breakdown:
First Set: Trailing 18-21, Minnesota erased a deficit and came back to win the set, 25-22. Minnesota took a 12-9 lead off a Lohman kill as Northwestern called a timeout. As Northwestern cut the lead to 13-12, Minnesota came back and took a 17-14 lead off a Samedy ace. The Wildcats came back and tied the set at 17-17 off a kill, which caused Minnesota to call a timeout. After Northwestern took an 18-17 lead, Samedy added a kill to tie the set at 18-18. Northwestern rattled off three-straight to take a 21-18 lead as the Gophers used their second timeout. Coming out of the break, Samedy added a kill, followed by a Lohman/Seliger-Swenson block to cut the Wildcat lead to one at 20-21 as Northwestern called a timeout. Minnesota tied the set at 21 off a Rosado ace and took the lead off a Northwestern attack error. Hart later pushed it to set point, while Samedy added a kill for the 1-0 lead.
Second Set: The Gophers and Northwestern tied 21 ties and had 12 lead changes before Minnesota took the set, 29-27. Northwestern took a 16-13 lead. The Gophers cut the Wildcat lead to one, 17-16, off an ace by Rosado, which resulted in a Northwestern timeout. The two teams tied the set at 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, before Minnesota took a 24-22 lead off a Samedy kill and ace to push it to set point. Northwestern called its second timeout of the set. After Northwestern gained a point, Minnesota called a timeout. The Wildcats tied the set at 24 before Samedy added a kill for a 25-24 lead. Northwestern tied the set at 25 and the two teams again would tie at 26 and again at 27 before two errors by Northwestern (double contact and attack error) put the Gophers up, 2-0.
Third Set: The Wildcats hit .467 in the set to Minnesota's .065 to win the set, 25-13. Northwestern opened the set with a 13-9 lead as the Gophers called a timeout. The Wildcats took a 17-10 lead as Minnesota called its second timeout of the set. The Wildcats, however, poured on the pressure and later took a 22-10 lead. The Wildcats later pushed it to set point off a Gopher attack error. The Gophers had back-to-back points, but Northwestern closed out the set with a kill to put the match at 2-1.
Fourth: The Gophers hit, .367 in the fourth set and won it, 25-19. Minnesota took a 13-12 lead as Northwestern called a timeout. The Gophers added to their lead with a Lohman kill for a 16-13 lead. Minnesota pushed the lead to 18-14 off a Lohman kills, which caused Northwestern to call its second timeout of the set. A block by Lohman/Samedy, followed by two kills from Samedy put the Gophers up, 21-16. Samedy added another kill for the 22nd point while Hart added the last Gopher point and took the match, 3-1.
