Woken Leads Gophers Past Huskies

MINNEAPOLIS - Alex Woken scored two goals and Sidney Peters recorded a 14-save shutout to lead the No. 6 University of Minnesota women's hockey team to a 3-0 win over St. Cloud State and extend the team's winning streak to five games Friday night at Ridder Arena.
Minnesota (10-4-1, 7-3-1-0 WCHA) only needed one period to put the game away as all three goals came in the opening six minutes of the game, marking the Gophers' fastest start so far this season.
"Good effort here tonight, certainly great to get out to a three-goal lead there," head coach Brad Frost said. "We came out with some real good energy in the first, and we were able to sustain that throughout the game I thought."
Along with Woken's two-goal effort, Sophie Skarzynski picked up a pair of assists in the win, and Nicole Schammel also tallied a goal, extending her team-best point streak to six games. Peters' 14-save shutout marks the team's first shutout of the season and Peters' 13 shutout of her career.
"Defensively, I thought we played very sound, really kept to the outside, some real good sticks and blocking shots to keep the zero. I'm really happy for Sid and our team but also know that for the last 50 minutes, it was a 0-0 hockey game so we're expecting a real battle here tomorrow."
Woken scored the eventual game-winner just 1:49 into the game when she buried a feed from Skarzynski. Schammel then scored her seventh goal of the season just 1:04 later. Patti Marshall and Taylor Wente picked up assists on the play as Wente extended her current point streak to five games.
Woken added her second goal of the night and fourth of the season at the 5:26 mark of the first period when she converted on Minnesota's first power play of the game. Skarzynski and Cara Piazza assisted on the play.
The Gophers had a 36-14 lead in shots on goal for the game, and St. Cloud State (2-11-0, 1-8-0-0 WCHA) received 33 saves from goaltender Janine Alder.
Minnesota was 1-for-5 on the power play and did not take a penalty, just the eighth time in program history that the Gophers have not taken a penalty in a game.
The Gophers and Huskies return to action in game two of this week's WCHA series at 4 p.m. CT Saturday afternoon at Ridder Arena.
