Gophers Win in Three Over Maryland

The No. 5 University of Minnesota volleyball team won in straight sets (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) to defeat Maryland at Maturi Pavilion. With the win, the Gophers improve to 22-2 and are 11-2 in conference play.
Minnesota hit .232 and had 41 kills in the three set victory. Stephanie Samedy led the Gophers with 18 kills and hit .471, followed by Alexis Hart with eight and Molly Lohman had six and hit .444. Dalianliz Rosado and Samedy both produced nine digs and Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 38 assists. Taylor Morgan led the team in blocks with four and Lohman had three.
The Gophers are back at Maturi Pavilion Saturday night to take on Ohio State in front of a sold out crowd at 7 p.m.
Set Breakdown:
First set: The Gophers hit .243 en route to a 25-23 set victory. Minnesota opened up the first set with a 4-1 run. Maryland kept it close until the Gophers started to pull away to bring their lead to 16-13, where Maryland also called their first timeout. An off-speed kill from Alexis Hart pushed the lead to 19-14 and as Maryland called its second timeout. A kill from Regan Pittman put Minnesota up 20-15. The Gophers called a timeout with a narrow 21-20 as the Terps came back to put themselves within one as the Terps again pulled within one at 23-22, Minnesota called a second timeout. A service error from Maryland brought Minnesota to set point and a kill from Jasmyn Martin finished off the first set.
Second set: Minnesota and Maryland traded points from 17-16 until the Gophers went up 2-0 to finish off the set 25-23. A kill from Samedy increased the Gopher lead to 11-7 and a kill from Martin gave the Gophers a 12-7 as Maryland called a timeout. Minnesota called their first timeout of the set at 17-16 as Maryland worked their way back. The Terps took the lead at 19-18 but a service error tied the game 19-19. A 21-19 lead from Maryland forced Minnesota to use their second timeout. Samedy and Molly Lohman provided kills out of the timeout and tied the set at 21-21. A hard hit kill from Samedy led Minnesota to match point and an attack error from Maryland ended the set as Minnesota took a 2-0 lead.
Third set: Minnesota clinched the sweep off a 25-21 set win. A block by Morgan and Seliger-Swenson at 8-4 as Maryland called a timeout. A kill from Lohman gave the Gophers a 10-5 lead and a stuff block from Lohman and Hart at 13-7 secured a six point lead. Kills from Lohman and Samedy put Minnesota up 20-17, which pushed Maryland to call a timeout. Martin and Morgan teamed up for a block to give the Gophers a 22-19 lead and back-to-back errors from Maryland closed out the game.
