Samedy Named Player and Freshman of the Week

For the second time this season, freshman opposite hitter Stephanie Samedy (Clermont, Fla.) has been named the Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Week, announced today by the league office. It marks her third weekly award this season and Minnesota's 14th weekly award this year.
Stephanie Samedy averaged 5.17 kills per set and hit .418 over the weekend in a pair of sweeps over Maryland and Ohio State. She also had 20 digs, three blocks and an ace. In the win over the Terrapins, Samedy led all attackers with a match-high 18 kills and hit .471 in 34 attempts. The six-rotation student-athlete also had nine digs and two blocks. In the sweep over Ohio State, she provided a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs, her 12th double-double of the year. In 33 attempts, she hit .364 in the win, while adding an ace and block. On the season, Samedy has a team-best 340 kills, averages 3.95 per set and is hitting .306. Her 3.95 kills per set ranks third in the conference and first among the freshmen class. She also ranks 13th in the league in digs per set (3.00)
The Golden Gophers begin a four-match road swing this weekend. Minnesota travels to Purdue and Indiana this weekend. Match times are 4:30 p.m., against the Boilermakers on Friday and 6 p.m. CT, against the Hoosiers Saturday.
