Gophers Win Seven Titles at SDSU

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Golden Gopher women's track & field team won seven event titles as members of the team got an early start to the 2018 season at the SDSU Holiday Open & Multi hosted by South Dakota State Friday evening.
The Gophers won four titles on the track led by Brieasha Hobbs, Titania Markland, and Rachel Schow. Hobbs won the 400-meter dash in 56.46 seconds, Markland won the 600-meter run in 1:29.89, and Schow won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.62 seconds. The trio also teamed up on Minnesota's winning 4x400-meter relay team as Schow, Hobbs, Val Larson, and Markland won in 3:44.66.
Lorean Murray made her collegiate debut with a first-place showing in the triple jump with a mark of 12.01m (39-05.00); she also finished as long jump runner-up (5.60m, 18-04.50).
Unattached Gophers swept the throwing event titles as Kaitlyn Long won the weight throw with a would-be Minnesota program record throw of 21.20m (69-06.75) and Nayoka Clunis won the shot put with a mark of 15.81m (51-10.50).
Minnesota secured four more runner-up finishes. On the track, Larson (600m, PR 1:31.78) and the 4x400m relay team of Lindsey Smits, Meleah Biermaier, Erin Huls, and Lorean Murray (3:52.43) were runners-up.
Ayesha Champagnie scored 3,667 points as runner-up in the pentathlon followed by career-best scores for Hannah Arason (3,614) and Ashley Ramacher (3,606) in third and fourth place, respectively. Kayla Nelson also recorded a PR pentathlon score of 3,473 to place sixth.
Lexi Kiefer finished as pole vault runner-up, clearing 3.90m (12-09.50) as well.
The Minnesota vs. Wisconsin Dual is set for Saturday, Jan. 13 at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse. Members of the team will also compete at the UST Opener hosted by St. Thomas on Friday, Jan. 12.
