Gophers Advance to B1G Match Play Semis

The Minnesota men's golf team opened its spring season by advancing to the Big Ten Match Play Championship semifinals. The seventh-seeded Golden Gophers defeated Nebraska 4-2 before knocking off second-seeded Michigan via tiebreaker in a 3-3 match at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla.
The Gophers will play two matches on Saturday, starting with a 7 a.m. CT semifinal against third-seeded Northwestern. In the afternoon Minnesota will face No. 5 Penn State or No. 8 Iowa in the championship or third-place match.
Justin Doeden scored for the Gophers in both his Friday matches. He defeated Nebraska's Cameron Jones 1 up, and halved his match with Nick Carlson, one of Michigan's top players.
Rúnar Arnorsson's 6&5 win over Nebraska's Jace Guthmiller and Riley Johnson's 8&7 win over Michigan's Bryce Evon were Minnesota's most lopsided victories of the day.
Jose Mendez and William Leaf also contributed wins against Nebraska, and Matt Rachey won in the Michigan match after sitting out the morning round.
