2/11/2017 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf
Minnesota took third place at the Big Ten Match Play in Palm Coast, Fla. The seventh-seeded Gophers lost their semifinal match 4.5 to 1.5 against eventual champion Northwestern, but beat eighth-seeded Iowa 3.5 to 2.5 in the afternoon to cap off their first spring tournament.
Rúnar Arnorsson won both his matches on Saturday and was 3-1 for the tournament. He led the whole way in his morning 2 up win against Northwestern's Ryan Lumsden, and was only all square for one hole in his 2&1 win against Iowa's Carson Schaake. Aside from Arnorsson's win, Riley Johnson's halved match with Sam Triplett was Minnesota's only scoring in the Northwestern match.
Justin Doeden went 1-1 Saturday and 2-1-1 over the weekend. He won his match with Iowa's Alex Schaake 4&3. Peter Jones also won his afternoon match, beating Ryoto Furuya 1 up. Jose Mendez halved his Iowa match with Sam Meuret.
The Gophers' 3-1 record as a team was their best at the Match Play since 2014, when they turned in the same record.
BTN will air tape-delayed coverage of the Big Ten Match Play on Feb. 25 at 10:30 a.m. CT.
Minnesota will return to action at Auburn's Tiger Invitational March 5-7.
