Day One: Winter Cup Challenge

University of Minnesota juniors Tristan Duran and Jalon Stephens competed in the preliminary sessions of the 2017 Winter Cup Challenge on Thursday in Las Vegas, Nev.
Recent Gophers alum Ellis Mannon, along with incoming freshmen Shane Wiskus and Russell Johnson also competed.
After prelims, Stephens and Wiskus have advanced to Saturday's all-around finals. Mannon has also qualifed on pommel horse after being among the top point scorers.
Stephens placed 23rd in the all-around competition with a 76.750. Stephens scored a 12.700 on floor, 10.550 on pommel horse, 13.250 on rings, 13.500 on vault, 13.500 on parallel bars and 13.200 on high bar. His high bar performance was the top score from the first preliminary session.
Duran competed on four events. He tallied scores of 11.950 on pommel horse, 13.500 on rings, 13.100 on parallel bars and 10.650 on high bar. Duran has been easing back into competition after an injury earlier this season.
Wiskus scored an impressive 80.150 to place 12th in prelims and advance. Johnson finished with a 70.500, to tie for 51st overall.
Mannon scored a 14.500 on pommel horse, earning him 16 points to advance outside of the all-around competitors.
Finals at the Winter Cup Challenge will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 9:15 p.m. Central.
