Minnesota opened the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships by qualifying two relays for the NCAA Championships. The Golden Gophers are in fifth place with 102 points after the first night of competition in Columbus, Ohio.
Daryl Turner, Conner McHugh, Paul Fair and Bowe Becker finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:24.53, automatically qualifying for NCAAs. Their time was .12 seconds off the school record.
Fair, Jakub Maly, Tuomas Pokkinen and Nick Saulnier posted a "B" cut of 6:21.39 to place fifth in the 800 freestyle relay. Fair's leadoff split of 1:35.07 was a personal record, and the team's time was 10 seconds faster than at last year's Big Ten meet.
The meet will resume Thursday with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. CT.
