Gophers Pick Up Win In Courtside Classic

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota women's tennis team takes down DePaul, 5-2, to end the Courtside Classic at Baseline Tennis Center Sunday morning.
Doubles
The doubles competition began with a loss for Mehvish Safdar and Caitlyn Merzbacher to DePaul's No. 56 ranked doubles team, Yulia Shupenia and Ana Vladutu, 6-1. Annemarie Emme and Camila Vargas Gomez soon closed the gap for the doubles point with a victory over Pati Lancranjan and Flo Abbott, 6-3.
The point came down to Caroline Ryba and Cammy Frei. They were able to overpower Keisha Clousing and Aspecia Augeri, 6-2, to clinch the doubles point for the Golden Gophers.
Singles
Vargas Gomez opened up singles competition defeating Flo Abbott 6-2, 6-3, securing the first singles point. Emme dropped two sets to the Blue Demons' Augeri, 6-3, 6-3, giving DePaul their first point of the match.
Safdar was able to pull out the win, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot. Barbara Mancera swept her first set against Pati Lancranjan but was upended in the next two sets, 0-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Tina Kreinis came back from being swept in her second set to thwart Clousing, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2, clinching the win for Minnesota.
Ryba picked up the last point for Maroon and Gold, topping DePaul's No. 87 Shupenia, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Dartmouth ended up taking first place at the Courtside Classic after defeating Washington State 5-2 while Minnesota's Caroline Ryba was named the tournament's MVP.
