MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) -- The University of Minnesota men's track & field program continues the 2017 indoor campaign this weekend at one of the largest indoor meets of the season in the Iowa State Classic.
The two-day meet begins Friday, Feb. 10 and runs through Saturday, Feb. 11.
The Maroon & Gold will also send a contingency of competitors to the UST Showcase on Friday, Feb. 10.
Lockard Set to Defend ISU Classic Title
All-American Ryan Lockard returns to Ames as the defending high jump champion at the ISU Classic. Lockard topped teammate and returning runner-up Nick Bachinski in a jump off for the title -- hitting a then personal record of 2.15 meters (7-00.50 ft.)

Gophers Shine at USATF Cross Country Championships
Three true freshman posted top-20 performances in the junor eight-kilometer race at the USATF Cross Country Championships last Saturday in Bend, Ore. Hamza Ali led the way for the Maroon & Gold with a third-place finish (26:14.5), unofficially qualifying for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships next month in Uganda. Meanwhile, Nick Rink came in ninth (27:00.0) and Alec Basten finished 19th (27:54.0).
'U' Nets 10 Titles at Jack Johnson
The University of Minnesota men's track & field program picked up a total of 10 individual titles the last time the team was officially in action at the Jack Johnson Classic. Among the Gophers winners were Ryan Lockard (High Jump), Obsa Ali (mile), Nate Roese (600), Jackson Wellenstein (400), Jordan Charles (60), Brad Neumann (200), Derek Wiebke (3,000), Matt Rosen (800) and the 4x400 meter relay team of Roese, Mitch Hechsel, Neumann and Wellenstein. Additionally, Gophers alum Sean Donnelly won the weight throw with a meet and fieldhouse record.

Four to Lead in 2017
The Minnesota track & field program will feature four new captains for the 2017 season as Luca Wieland, Gian Ferretti, Mitch Hechsel and Charlie Lawrence will lead the Gophers throughout the year. Wieland, Ferretti and Hechsel were all honored as All-Americans during the 2016 season while Lawrence also served as captain of the cross country team this year and earned All-Big Ten honors.
Wieland Sets School Record in Season Debut
One of several Gophers to compete already this year, senior multi-eventer Luca Wieland closed out 2016 with a huge performance at the SDSU Holiday Open and Multi. Wieland, who won the 2015 NCAA heptathlon title, broke his own school record in the event by totaling 6,089 points -- the third highest point total in Big Ten history and the 12th highest point total in NCAA history. Wieland was honored as the USTFCCCA national athlete of the week and the Big Ten athlete of the week for his accomplishment.
Up Next - Snowshoe Open/Alex Wilson Invitational (Notre Dame)
The Gophers will host their third and final home meet of the 2017 season on Friday, Feb. 17 with the Snowshoe Open at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse on campus. That same weekend, Minnesota will compete at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational (Feb. 17-18).
