Gophers DMR Earns NCAA Bid

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Fresh off an All-Big Ten performance last weekend, the Gophers distance medley relay team has earned a bid to compete at the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships, March 10-11, in College Station, Texas.
The men's distance medley relay finals are set for Friday, March 10 at 8:55 p.m. CT at Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Stadium. ESPN3 will stream the meet live starting at 5:25 p.m. CT while a re-air of the championships will air on Sunday, March 12 at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN2.
Minnesota's squad of Shane Streich, Jackson Wellenstein, Mitch Hechsel and Derek Wiebke qualified for the event with a 9:30.48 earlier this season at the Alex Wilson Invitational. The performance ranks third all-time at Minnesota and eighth among entrants in the NCAA field.
The same grouping finished as the conference runner-ups (9:38.03) to earn Second Team All-Big Ten last weekend at the 2017 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships last weekend in Geneva, Ohio. Wiebke went on to win the Big Ten title and collect First Team All-Big Ten accolades in the mile with a personal record 4:01.85 (Streich finished fourth in the event with his own personal record of 4:03.91) while Hechsel added a runner-up finish in the 800 meters with a personal record 1:48.23.
