Minnesota Falls in Second DQ Classic Game

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota fell in their second game of the Dairy Queen Classic 4-0 to Hawaii Saturday night at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The starting pitcher for the Gophers was Brett Schulze who threw 5.0 innings where he allowed five hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out three of the 23 batters he faced. Schulze picked up the loss, his first of the season and of his career.

Jeff Fasching relieved Schulze in the sixth inning and went 0.1 innings and faced three batters. He allowed two hits and one earned run. Next was Jake Stevenson who made his second appearance of the year. He went 2.0 innings, striking out one batter and allowing one hit and one earned run.

Senior Tim Shannon finished the game on the bump for the Maroon and Gold. He was in for 1.2 innings, striking out two batters and he did not allow a hit.

Sophomore shortstop Terrin Vavra continued his offensive tear, recording two more hits tonight. Vavra has 10 hits in his last five games, creating a .293 batting average. He also recorded his second stolen base of the season after not stealing a base last season.

Luke Pettersen continues to hit, extending his hitting streak to four games while Jordan Smith recorded hit number 14, second most on the team only to Pettersen. Micah Coffey recorded the other Golden Gopher hit in the first inning when he singled to center field.

Minnesota will close out the Dairy Queen Classic tomorrow when they host Iowa at 3 p.m. in a nonconference game. Tomorrow is also Minnesota Day, students and University of Minnesota staff get in free with their ID. Come out to show your Minnesota pride!
