Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers will continue their homestand at U.S. Bank Stadium with two mid-week games versus South Dakota State and Milwaukee.
The game against South Dakota State will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday while the Gophers play Milwaukee Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
This past week the Maroon and Gold posted a 2-3 record after falling to North Dakota State and Hawaii twice while defeating Oral Roberts and Iowa in the Dairy Queen Classic.
Minnesota was 2-1 in the tournament which celebrated its 30th year of existence and its first year in U.S. Bank Stadium. Shortstop Terrin Vavra and left handed starter Lucas Gilbreath were named to the All-Tournament team. Vavra posted a .308 batting average with one run scored, one walk and one stolen along with making multiple strong plays in the field. In his one appearance in the tournament, Gilbreath went 6.0 scoreless innings where he allowed one hit, no earned runs and struck out five batters.
Junior second baseman Luke Pettersen still leads the team with a .529 batting average while Jordan Smith is second with a .385 batting average and leads the team with two home runs. Micah Coffey has nine RBIs which leads the team and Vavra has the most stolen bases with two.
Freshmen Brett Schulze and Nolan Burchill have made strong starts for the Gophers. Schulze is 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA and 10 strikeouts while Burchill is 0-1 in one appearance, picking up six strikeouts to go with his 2.08 ERA. Toby Anderson posted his best start of the season Sunday as he went 6.0 innings versus Iowa. He struck out four batters and allowed three earned runs which came in the first inning.
Minnesota's bullpen has had a solid start of the season with four pitchers making four or more appearances. Brian Glowicki picked up his fourth save of the season Sunday and boasts a 1.35 ERA with eight strikeouts. Nick Lackney has allowed one hit in nine innings where he has struck out seven batters while Tim Shannon has a 3.00 ERA in six appearances with four strike outs.
About South Dakota State
The Jackrabbits are 2-4 this season and are currently on a four-game losing streak. Matt Johnson leads the team with a .409 batting average, one home run and five RBIs. Leading SDSU in stolen bases is Anthony Schneider with two. Ryan Froom leads all starters with a 1.38 ERA along with a 1-0 record and seven strikeouts. Chris Halbur has the lone save for the Jackrabbits. The Gophers are 30-12 (.714) all-time versus SDSU.
About Milwaukee
The Panthers are 6-5 after splitting a four-game series with Evansville. Chris Kelly leads Milwaukee with a .364 batting average while Daulton Varsho is batting .318. Varsho also leads the team with three home runs and nine RBIs. Austin Schulfer leads all starting pitchers with a 0.96 ERA along with a 2-1 record and 15 strikeouts. Minnesota leads the all-time series versus Milwaukee 9-5 (.643).
