PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Madeline Strandemo earned a runner-up finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Ocean State Invitational hosed by Providence College Saturday evening.
Strandemo ran her second-fastest 3,000m steeplechase time of her career, coming in second in 10:04.98 in a field that included some of the nation's top steeplechasers.
Facing approximately a 15 mile-per-hour wind, Strandemo went out on pace for a PR and hung in for a runner-up showing behind New Hampshire's Elinor Purrier, last year's NCAA runner-up in the event, who ran 9:43.65 for the win.
Strandemo ranks second in Minnesota history in the 3,000m steeplechase at 10:03.52. Saturday, she went out at 9:40 pace through the first mile, even faster through the first 800 meters, and turned in her second-best time ever while battling tough weather conditions.
Strandemo and the Gophers are back in action next week at the Kansas Relays.
