Nelson Fifth After Heptathlon Day One

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Day one of the Kansas Relays saw University of Minnesota women's track & field redshirt freshman Kayla Nelson compete in the first four events of the heptathlon. Nelson set three career-best marks and is in fifth place heading into the second and final day of competition on Thursday.
Through four events, Nelson has 2,902 points in her heptathlon debut for Minnesota.
Nelson started off the four-day meet for the Gophers with a career-best time of 15.45 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, placing ninth in the heptathlon field and securing 783 points. She followed up with a mark of 1.56m (5-01.25) in the high jump, just shy of her career-best at 1.57m (5-01.75), to take seventh in the event.
The Rush City, Minn., native recorded her highest finishes of the day in her final two events. She set a career-best mark in the heptathlon shot put at 10.57m (34-08.25) for fourth place and 567 points before taking third in the heptathlon 200-meter dash with a career-best time of 25.26 seconds and 863 points. Nelson climbed from eighth to fifth place overall following the 200m.
The heptathlon resumes with the long jump at 9 a.m. CT Thursday with javelin to follow at 10 a.m. CT before wrapping up with the 800-meter run at 11:15 a.m. CT. Action at the Kansas Relays continues through Saturday with the Gophers competing all three days.
