MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - After breaking the University of Minnesota decathlon record and posting one of the top scores in the nation this season, Gophers senior captain Luca Wieland has been named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week.

A native of Saarbrucken, Germany, Wieland won the decathlon at the Mt. SAC Multi-Events and Relays behind six outdoor personal records for a score of 8,201 points - the biggest point total in school history. The mark also stands as the third highest point total in the nation and the highest point total in the Big Ten this year.

Wieland has now posted new records for both of Minnesota's multi-events this season - breaking his own heptathlon record to open the indoor campaign (6,089) while his decathlon score bests the previous school record of 7,862 set by Jack Szmanda in 2012.

He opened the competition with outdoor personal records in the 100 meters (10.52, 970 points), the shot put (14.89 meters, 48-10.25 ft., 783 points) and the 400 meters (48.88, 867 points). He closed out the opening day of competition with 4,412 points behind performances in the long jump (7.53 meters, 24-08.50 ft., 942 points) and the high jump (2.05 meters, 6-08.75 ft., 850 points).

Day 2 of the decathlon saw Wieland start with a personal record in the 110-meter hurdles (14.43, 920 points) before leading the field in the discus (44.78 meters, 146-11 ft., 762 points). He added an outdoor personal record in the pole vault (4.80 meters, 15-09.00 ft., 849 points). After the javelin (48.60 meters, 159-05 ft., 568 points), Wieland closed out the competition with his sixth outdoor personal of the competition in the 1,500 meters (4:38.54, 690 points).
