The University of Minnesota athletics department is saddened to learn of the loss of longtime equipment manager Richard "Dick" Mattson, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 73 after a battle with cancer.

Mattson, affectionately known as "Matty" to family and friends, spent 48 years as a member of the Gophers equipment staff, including 32 seasons presiding over the equipment operations for the football program. He retired from the department in 2008, after working with nearly every Gopher program during his tenure.

Last October, Mattson was recognized with the University of Minnesota "M" Club's Distinguished Service Award in honor of his contributions to Gopher Athletics.

Mattson is survived by his son Keith, daughter-in-law Mary Ellen and granddaughter Katherine.
