MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - Gopher Hockey alum and current New York Rangers defenseman Brady Skjei has been named to the 2016-17 NHL All-Rookie Team, the league announced on Thursday.

A native of Lakeville, Minn., Skjei skated in 80 regular-season games for the Rangers in 2016-17 with 39 points (five goals, 34 assists). He is the first Rangers rookie defenseman to tally at least 39 points since NHL Hall of Famer Brian Leetch in 1988-89. Skjei has skated in a total of 87 regular-season NHL games for the Rangers while also leading New York to a pair of Stanley Cup playoff appearances. In 17 playoff games, Skjei has seven points (four goals, three assists).

With the Maroon & Gold, Skjei played in 109 career games with 27 points (eight goals, 19 assists). A two-time All-Big Ten Honorable Mention pick, the defenseman helped the Gophers to three-straight regular-season conference titles, one conference playoff title and three-straight NCAA tournament berths including a nation championships appearance in 2014.
