Golden Gophers in the NHL Draft
CHICAGO (GopherSports.com) - Incoming Gopher Hockey freshman Casey Mittelstadt became the Maroon & Gold's 20th first round selection when the Buffalo Sabres selected him eighth overall on Friday night at the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.
A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Mittelstadt is the highest Gophers draft pick since 2006 and the 10th Minnesota player selected by the Sabres.

Mittelstadt was named the 2017 recipient of the Mr. Hockey Award after closing out his prep career by leading Eden Prairie High School to the state tournament for the fourth-straight season. The forward repeated as the Associated Press Player of the Year and a First Team All-State honoree as well as the USA Today All-USA Boys Hockey Player of the Year and a First Team selection. Mittelstadt served as Eden Prairie's captain as a senior and also spent time in the USHL with the Green Bay Gamblers.

A recent invitee to USA Hockey's 2017 World Junior Summer Showcase, Mittelstadt previously helped the U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team claim a bronze medal at the 2016 IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship.
