Safdar and Vujic named ITA Scholar-Athletes

FULL LIST OF ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMS AND SCHOLAR-ATHLETES
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced today that two University of Minnesota women's tennis players have been named 2017 Scholar-Athletes. Mehvish Safdar and Maja Vujic are the two Gophers selected for the honor.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
In singles last season Safdar went 11-12 overall, including 5-5 in the spring season. She also played with Caitlyn Merzbacher, primarily in the No. 1 slot, in doubles and finished with a record of 12-16 overall, including 9-12 in the spring. Mehvish will be one of two seniors on the 2017 roster.
Vujic finished her senior season with a 15-14 record in singles, including 10-8 in the spring season. The Niagara Falls, Ont. native finished with a 5-5 record against Big Ten opponents, including 3-1 in both the No. 4 and No. 5 slot. In doubles, Vujic paired with a few partners, and saw the most success with Camila Vargas Gomez with a 4-1 record in the Fall.
