OTTAWA, Ontario - Agnes Esser won Canada's national title in the discus and followed up with a fifth-place showing in the hammer throw as she competed at the 2017 Canadian Track & Field Championships at Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Ottawa, Ontario on Friday and Saturday.

Friday's action saw Esser defend her title from a year ago in the discus. She battled tough weather conditions, including a delay at the start of the competition, to win her second-straight discus national crown with a throw of 50.95m (167-02). She won by nearly three meters ahead of runner-up Brittany Crew of SISU Throws Club at 48.09m.

Esser defended her title from a year ago when she threw 50.32m (165-01) to top the field at the Canadian Championships and Rio Selection Trials in Edmonton, Alberta.

The McBride, B.C., native followed up with a throw of 59.19m in hammer to secure a top-five showing on Saturday evening. She threw 59.19m on her third throw to lock down fifth place.

Esser holds Minnesota's discus program record at 57.91m (190-00), a mark she set during the 2016 season. Earlier this year, Esser recorded her career-best hammer mark of 61.66m (202-03) at the Longhorn Invite to move into third in Gophers' history.
