University of Minnesota football coach P.J. Fleck announced that quarterbacks Conor Rhoda and Demry Croft would both see action against Buffalo when the Gophers open the 2017 season at home on Thursday, Aug. 31.
Minnesota enters the season with the least experienced quarterbacks among any Power 5 team. Rhoda and Croft are the only two of Minnesota's six quarterbacks who have seen game action and have combined to make eight appearances and one start. South Carolina is the only other Power 5 school whose quarterbacks have also combined to make eight appearances, but they have seven starts on their roster.
Rhoda is a fifth-year senior who has played in five career games (three in 2016 and two in 2014). Last season, he started and played the entire game at Maryland and led Minnesota to a 31-10 road victory. He also saw action in a blowout wins against Indiana State and Illinois. In 2014, he competed against San Jose State (did not record any statistics) and attempted one pass in a 51-14 win against Iowa.
For his career, Rhoda has completed 8-of-17 passes for 88 yards and one touchdown. The majority of that work came at Maryland last year where he completed 7-of-15 passes for 82 yards and one touchdown.
Croft played in three games as a true freshman in 2015 before taking a redshirt year in 2016. In 2015, he played against Northwestern, Purdue and for one snap at Ohio State. He made his career debut in relief duty at Northwestern and completed 5-of-11 passes for 27 yards. Against Purdue, Croft connected on 2-of-5 passes for seven yards and also rushed three times for 34 yards.
For his career, Croft has rushed nine times for 38 yards and has completed 7-of-17 passes for 34 yards.
Combined, Rhoda and Croft have completed 15-of-34 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown in their eight appearances.
