MINNEAPOLIS - In this edition of our summer spotlight, Gopher Sports caught up with Minnesota softball senior Erika Rozell. Rozell had the opportunity to attend the Major League All-Star Game in Miami, as well as enjoying an internship with Enterprise.
Gopher Sports: First of all, how is your summer going so far?
Erika Rozell: My summer has been great! I have been working about 50 hours a week between my internship at Enterprise and my other job at Goldy's Locker Room. Between working and working out, my summer has been very eventful, but I wouldn't want it any other way. I enjoy having a lot on my plate, both literally and physically, because it has taught me a lot about prioritizing and hard work.
GS: You recently traveled to the MLB All-Star game with your sustainability Through Sport class. What did you do in Miami and how was your experience?
ER: We were able to do a lot of different volunteer events while we were in Miami. The first day we had the opportunity to build and paint park benches, mulch the landscaping and repaint the parking lot lines. We did all these activities alongside a couple community youth baseball teams. The next day we volunteered at the All Star 5K. It was a great experience to help set up for this event as well as cheer the runners on as they finished the race. The next couple of days we volunteered at Marlins Park for the All Star Baseball events. The home run derby was by far the most exciting event I volunteered at during my time in Miami. The group I went with is called the Green Team and it is college students all over the country that come together to promote sustainability through sporting events.
GS: Can you tell us a little bit about you internship with Enterprise?
ER: My internship with Enterprise has been one of the best professional experiences I have had. My title is a management trainee intern. It may not have been the most glamorous internship but I have learned so much about how to manage a business along with customer service. This has been such a great opportunity for me because I was able to get my foot in the door at an amazing company and get a couple months of experience under my belt.
GS: Any other summer plans?
ER: I am looking forward to having a couple free weeks to go on some adventures and actually spend some time with my friends.
GS: Favorite memory from this past season?
ER: My favorite memory from this past season would be winning the Big Ten tournament because we played a lot of tough teams and it really took everyone to get each win.
GS: Next season will be your senior year. What are some expectations you have of yourself and the team?
ER: I have very high expectations for not only myself but for my teammates. After an eventful summer we're all just really excited to get back on campus and start practicing and working out together again.
