Gophers Earn Second Win of the Season

The No. 4 University of Minnesota volleyball program erased a first set loss to win, 3-1, over Louisville, today in Madison, Wis. The Golden Gophers improve to 2-0 and went undefeated in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Golden Gophers fell in the first set, 20-25, but won the next three, 25-18, 25-18, 25-20.
Minnesota hit .261 in the match to Louisville's .143. The Gophers also had eight blocks to the Cardinals' six. Stephanie Samedy added her second double double of her short career when she had a team-high 17 kills and 15 digs. Alexis Hart had 15 kills, while Regan Pittman also had 10. Dalianliz Rosado added 17 digs, while Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 43 assists.
The Gophers open their home season when it hosts the Diet Coke Classic, Sept. 1-2. Minnesota welcomes West Virginia, UTSA and Tennessee to Maturi Pavilion.
Set Breakdown:
First Set: The Cardinals used an opening 7-0 run to maintain the lead and take a 25-20 first set win. Louisville opened the match with a 7-0 run as Minnesota used one of its timeouts in that span. The Gophers later cut the Cardinal lead to three off a Pittman kill. A Hart kill pulled the Gophers within two at 12-10. Minnesota came within one at 15-14, but the Cardinals went on a 3-0 run to cushion the lead. It forced the Gophers to use their second timeout before Minnesota came within two at 19-17. Minnesota again pulled within one at 21-20, but a Gopher attack error, two Louisville kills gave the Cards the set win.
Second Set: Pittman posted five kills to help the Gophers to a 25-18 set win. After the two teams traded points through 7-7, the Gophers took a 10-7 lead off a Lauren Barnes ace. The three-point run caused Louisville to call a timeout. Minnesota built a 14-8 lead. A Samedy kill pushed the Gopher lead to 17-12. Pittman pushed the score to a 19-14 lead, while Seliger-Swenson had a kill for a 21-15 lead. A Hart kill pushed it to set point, while a Louisville attack error gave Minnesota the set win and tied the match at 1-1.
Third Set: Minnesota hit .355, while it held Louisville to .109 in the third set to win it, 25-18. Tied 6-6, Minnesota took a 9-6 lead in the third after a Pittman block, a Hart kill, a Louisville attack error and Lohman/Seliger-Swenson block. It forced Louisville to call a timeout. The Gophers continued to pour on the pressure and finished with an 8-1 run and a 14-7 lead. A Samedy kill pushed the score to 16-10 Gopher advantage, while Martin pushed the lead to 19-13. Samedy added another kill for a 22-16 score. Minnesota finished off the set with a Louisville service error, a Samedy kill and another Louisville attack error for a 2-1 lead.
Fourth Set: Minnesota opened the fourth set with a 4-1 run, capped off with a kill from Hart. Louisville battle back and tied the set at 5-5. Both teams traded points through 13-13 before the Cardinals added a kill and a 14-13 lead. It forced the Gophers to call a timeout. The two teams continued to go back and forth until the 17-17 point. Tied at 17-17, Minnesota went on a 3-0 run as Louisville had a service error and back-to-back kills from Samedy. Louisville came within one at 20-19, but also had a service error and two attack errors to push the Gopher lead to 23-19. After a Pittman kill for set point, the Gophers closed out the match with a block from Morgan and Pittman for the win.
