Gophers Open Season with Intrasquad

MINNEAPOLIS ââ'¬" Twenty-two Gophers unofficially opened the season Friday evening as the University of Minnesota women's cross country team held its annual Intrasquad 5K race at Les Bolstad Cross Country Course.
Newcomers Olivia Hummel, Anastasia Korzenowski, and Jaycie Thomsen led the way. Hummel, a sophomore transfer from the University of Dayton, paced the field in 19:01.68 with true freshmen Korzenowski (19:05.93) and Thomsen (19:11.20) finishing second and third, respectively.
Sophomore Elyse Prescott was the top returner, placing fourth in 19:19.92; Prescott was also the number one runner returning to the Intrasquad from last year's field where she was seventh. Rookie Sophie Schmitz rounded out the top five in 19:32.88.
The Gophers split the squad into Maroon and Gold teams for the annual season-opening exhibition 5K race. Hummel won the race for the Maroon team while Korzenowski led the Gold team as overall runner-up. Gold defeated Maroon by a score of 24-31.
Minnesota's top-12 runners of preseason training did not compete at the Intrasquad as they officially open the season at the Indiana Open on Saturday morning. Gophers Courtney Alama, Emily Betz, Molly Eastman, Lindsey Greenlund, Bethany Hasz; Megan Hasz, Abby Kargol; Abby Kohut-Jackson, Bailey Ness, Patty O'Brien, Madeline Strandemo, and Zetta Mason race at 8:20 a.m. CT in Bloomington, Ind.
