Gophers Win Five-Set Thriller over Boise State

The No. 1 University of Minnesota won its first five-set match of the season when it defeated host Boise State, tonight in Boise, Idaho. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 10-0 on the season.
Stephanie Samedy led all attackers with a career-best 26 kills and 76 attempts. She also had 12 digs and four blocks. Alexis Hart hit .432 when she had a season-best 19 kills. Molly Lohman and Regan Pittman each had four blocks, while Samantha Seliger-Swenson had a season-high 59 assists, 13 digs an ace and two blocks. Dalianliz Rosado added a team-best 22 digs. In all, 12 Gophers saw action in the win.
With the two matches today at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. CT, the Gophers played two matches within 10.5 hours. They also played nine sets and spent 4.5 of those 10.5 hours on the court.
Minnesota plays again tomorrow at 11 a.m. CT against Idaho State.
Set Breakdown:
First Set: Minnesota used four blocks to push the Gophers to a 25-22 set win. The two teams traded points through the 14-14 point. Minnesota added a 4-0 run for an 18-14 lead. Seliger-Swenson later pushed the Gopher lead to 20-16 with a kill and Hart added back-to-back kills for a 22-18 lead, which forced Boise State to call a timeout. A pair of Samedy kills pushed it to set point. Boise State pushed back and cut the Gopher lead to two at 24-22, but Minnesota finished off the set after the match's longest rally off a BSU attack error for the 1-0 lead.
Second Set: Minnesota opened the second set with a 9-4 lead, which paced the Gophers to a 25-19 set win. Pittman put the Gophers up, 10-5, with a block and two kills, which forced the Broncos to call a timeout. The Gophers, however, continued to add on the lead and held a 14-5 lead off a Kleinman kill, which forced BSU to call its second timeout. Minnesota later took a 17-11 lead off a Hart kill. BSU cut the Gopher lead to 17-13 as Minnesota called its first timeout. Kleinman added back-to-back kills at 21-17 and 22-17. Pittman added an overpass kill for set point, while Kleinman produced a kill of the match to put Minnesota up, 2-0.
Third Set: Boise State used a small run in the middle of the set to give the Broncos a 25-21 set win. BSU opened the third with an 8-5 lead and later 10-7. Minnesota, responded and later tied up the set at 12-12 off a BSU attack error. From there, the two teams traded points until Boise State went up two at 19-17. It would be all that the Broncos would need to secure the set win. BSU went up 23-20 as the Gophers called a timeout. The lead, however, was too much for the Gophers to overcome as the Broncos took the third, 25-21.
Fourth Set: After the two teams tied at 4-4, Minnesota went on a 3-1 run for a 7-4 lead. The Gophers later held a 15-11 lead off a BSU attack error. BSU cut the Gopher lead to 16-15, but Minnesota responded with back-to-back kills from Samedy and Kleinman. The Broncos, however, responded back and eventually tied up the set, 23-23. BSU rattled off two points to take the fourth set and win it, 25-23.
Fifth Set: Minnesota went up, 4-2 off back-to-back kills from Samedy as BSU called a timeout. Boise State battled back and tied the set at 5-5. Minnesota and BSU last tied at 8-8 before the Gophers rattled off three-straight for an 11-8 lead, capped off by a Samedy kill. BSU came within one at 12-11 on a block, which forced Minnesota to call a timeout. Minnesota took a 13-11 lead off a Hart kill. After a Kleinman kill at 14-12, the Broncos called a timeout. Minnesota, however, finished off the set and match with a Samedy kill as the Gophers won their first five-set match of the season.
