Gophers Remember Steve Hoag

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – The University of Minnesota and the men’s track & field and cross country program mourns the loss of Gophers alum Steve Hoag, who passed away on Sept. 15, 2017.
Hoag was a team captain, an All-American and a Big Ten champion for the Maroon & Gold, competing in cross country and track.
On the track, Hoag helped the Gophers capture the 1968 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championship before picking up All-America honors later that year with a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters. In 1969, he added an individual Big Ten title in the two-mile competition. Hoag captained the 1968 cross country team and was the recipient of the Fred O. Watson Award in 1967 and 1968 – the first two years the honor was bestowed.
Following his college career, Hoag continued to compete including a second-place finish at the 1975 Boston Marathon. He was named to the Minnesota Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2000.
Later in life, Hoag was involved in a number of running stores including his own venture, Marathon Sports. After retiring, Hoag stayed active in the running community as a high school coach including his most recent position as an assistant coach at Minnetonka High School.
