Gophers Settle for 2-2 Tie With Michigan

The University of Minnesota soccer team went another 110 minutes in their Big Ten Network game against Michigan, which ended in a 2-2 draw at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
The Gophers came from behind in the game, after falling back 1-0 in the first half, Julianna Gernes beat the Michigan keeper twice in the second half to put Minnesota on top. Michigan then tied the game up with just 11 seconds remaining to force overtime, and eventually the draw.
"Really pleased with the performance, really disappointed with the results. We certainly outplayed and had a lot more opportunities, their keeper stood on her head a bit today," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "We should have been going to the corner to take off more time on the clock, but we didn't and it is unfortunate and we will learn from it and it won't happen again."
Minnesota outshot Michigan 39-7 in the contest, with 12 of them on goal. The 39 shots on goal is the most in a game in over three years.
The two goals for Gernes was her first multiple goal game in her collegiate career, and puts her season total to four, which is second on the team.
"Julianna [Gernes] is a kid that at any given point she can be in the starting lineup for us. She is one of the most important players on our team," Golan said. "She is a player that can read what she sees on the field really well and she can be very impactful. She was tremendous tonight."

The Gophers were paced by not only Gernes, but also April Bockin who had eight shots in the game, two being on goal. Junior captain Emily Heslin also added six shots, with three on goal.
The Gophers kept the pressure on in the game offensively; they forced nine corner kicks in the game, and allowed just three to the Wolverines.
The overtime game was the fifth overtime game the Gophers have played in nine games, and the fourth game that went to double overtime. The Gophers are 1-1-3 in extra time this season.
Kailee Sharp was able to make two saves today, including a big moment in the 52nd minute to keep the game then at a 1-0 deficit for the Gophers.
The Gophers will look for their first Big Ten victory on Sunday with a matchup with Michigan State at home. The game is set for 1:00 p.m. on BTN Plus.
