Gophers Near Top of Maui Jim Leaderboard

The Gopher men's golf team is tied for second after 18 holes of the Maui Jim Intercollegiate. Minnesota posted a combined team score of 1-over 289 at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree, Ariz., on Friday.
Senior Riley Johnson is tied for third individually after a 2-under-par 70. He birdied three of his last four holes. Johnson is two strokes behind leader Gisli Sveinbergsson of Kent a State, and one behind Georgia Tech's Noah Norton.
Three Gophers are in the top 20 heading into Day 2. Peter Jones carded a 72 with three birdies on the back nine for a tie for 11th. Angus Flanagan is tied for 20th with a 73.
Rúnar Arnórsson's 74 counted for the Gophers' fourth score. Thomas Longbella rounded out the lineup with an 82.
Round 2 of 3 will take place Saturday. Minnesota's tee times begin at 10:20 a.m. CT, with live scoring on Golfstat.
