Gophers Sixth at Maui Jim Led by Flanagan, Jones

Angus Flanagan and Peter Jones both notched top-10 finishes as the Minnesota men's golf team placed sixth of 13 at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate. The Golden Gophers finished 8 over par with a 54-hole score of 872 at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree, Ariz.
Flanagan finished fifth in his second collegiate tournament. The freshman carded a 3-under 69 on Sunday to finish 4 under for the tournament. Jones, a junior, matched Flanagan's 69 on Sunday. He made an eagle on the par-5 seventh to assist his cause. Jones tied for sixth at 3 under.
Riley Johnson tied for 29th after a 77 in Round 3. He was 5 over for the weekend. Rúnar Arnorsson (+15) tied for 56th after an 80. Thomas Longbella (+19) tied for 62nd but contributed a scoring round of 75 on the final day.
Gus Minkin (+9) tied for 37th playing as an individual. He had a 77 in the third round. Charlie Duensing tied with Longbella with an 81 Sunday.
Arizona State won the tournament with a team score of 857 (-7), one stroke ahead of Georgia Tech. The Sun Devils' Alex Del Rey Gonzalez captured medalist honors by three shots at 10 under.
Minnesota's next road trip will be to Fairfax, Calif., for the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Meadow Club. The tournament runs Oct. 9-10.
