MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 20 Golden Gopher women's cross country team will split the squad at a pair of meets this weekend. Minnesota's top runners travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday after the rest of the team competes locally at the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invite on Friday evening.
About the UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invite
The 2017 UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invite is set for this Friday at Whitetail Golf Course near Colfax, Wis. The men's 8K race kicks off the meet at 4:15 p.m. followed by the women's 6K race at 5:15 p.m.
About the Greater Louisville Classic
The 2017 Greater Louisville Classic is set for this Friday and Saturday at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. Saturday's race schedule includes three sections of college women's 5K races beginning with the College Women's Gold Race at 9:15 a.m. CT, followed by the College Women's Blue Race (10:30 a.m.), and College Women's Silver Race (11:45 a.m.).
Last Time Out: Roy Griak Invitational
The Gophers placed three runners in the top 15 and all five scoring runners among the top 30 to secure a podium finish in third place at the 2017 Roy Griak Invitational last weekend. Minnesota's top three runners finished within eight seconds and four places of one another. Madeline Strandemo led the Gophers in 10th place overall in 21:47.1 followed by Bethany Hasz on Strandemo's heels in 21:51.6 for 11th. Megan Hasz came in 13th in 21:54.2. Bailey Ness (22:25.1) and Courtney Alama (22:32.6) came in 24th and 27th, respectively, to round out Minnesota's scoring runners in a field of 188 finishers at the 32nd annual Griak Invitational, where runners faced temperatures near 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
San Francisco won the team title with the top four overall individuals, scoring 22 points to finish ahead of runner-up Iowa State (72 points), Minnesota (85 points), Michigan State (91 points), and South Dakota (208 points) in the top five.
Gophers Come in at No. 20 in USTFCCCA Week Three Poll
The Gophers fell one place to No. 20 in the nation according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Week Three National Coaches' Poll. This week, Minnesota also slipped to the second-ranked team in the USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Rankings.
Who's Back?
Minnesota's 2017 roster includes all top nine runners from last year's postseason roster led by individual NCAA qualifier Madeline Strandemo. Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz join Strandemo as returning NCAA all-region performers.
Quintet Serving as Captains
Five captains are leading this year's team: first-year captains Amelia Barczi, Bailey Ness, Patty O'Brien, and Paige Peschel and returning captain Madeline Strandemo.
Up Next: Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invite and Tori Neubauer Invite
The Gophers will once again split the squad for a pair of meets next weekend. Minnesota's top runners will travel to the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis., on Friday, Oct. 13 while the rest of the team competes locally at the Tori Neubauer Invitational hosted by UW-La Crosse on Saturday, Oct. 14.
