Gophers Fall to Huskers in Three

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball program fell in straight sets tonight, to No. 8 Nebraska in Lincoln, Neb., 25-21, 25-18, 25-13. With the loss, the Golden Gophers fall to 12-2 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play. The Cornhuskers improved to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in league action.
Minnesota was led by Alexis Hart as she had 13 kills, followed by Stephanie Samedy with seven and Regan Pittman with six. Molly Lohman had four blocks while Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 26 assists and a team-best 11 digs. Nebraska hit .301 as a team to Minnesota's .183 and held a 52-33 kill advantage. Both teams had seven blocks each.
Minnesota is set to play in Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes, tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
Set Breakdown:
First Set: Nebraska used a 7-1 run in the middle of the first set to win, 25-21. Both teams traded points until Nebraska went up, 11-7 off a kill as the Gophers called a timeout. The Huskers, however, built a 15-8 lead as the Gophers used their second timeout of the set. Pittman added a kill off the block to trail, 16-10, and another at 17-12. Minnesota rattled off three-straight points, including kills from Hart and Samedy, to cut the Husker lead to three at 18-15 and forced Nebraska to call a timeout. Minnesota cut the Husker lead to one at 18-17 off a block from Lohman and Hart, but Nebraska battled back and lead back to three at 20-17 off a kill and later won the set, 25-21.
Second Set: Nebraska hit .342 in the second set to take a 25-18 second set win. After the two teams tied at 8-8, Nebraska went on a 3-0 run to take an 11-8 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. Nebraska built a 19-12 lead as the Gophers used their second timeout of the set. As Nebraska led, 24-16, the Huskers committed two attack errors and called a timeout. The Huskers, however, came out of the break and took the set off a kill to go up, 2-0.
Third Set: The Huskers held the lead from the 3-2 point in the set en route to a 25-13 set win. Nebraska opened the third set, 9-4, which forced Minnesota to call a timeout. The Huskers built a 17-8 lead as the Gophers called their second timeout of the set. Minnesota added three straight off a Lohman kill and back-to-back blocks as it forced Nebraska to call a timeout. The Huskers, however, finished off the match with an 8-2 run to take the match, 3-0.
