Gophers Earn 3-0 Sweep Over Iowa

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball program defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes, 3-0, tonight in Iowa City, Iowa. The Golden Gophers (13-2, 2-2 in Big Ten) won 25-23, 25-22, 25-19.
Stephanie Samedy and Jasmyn Martin each had 13 kills, while Alexis Hart followed with 12. Molly Lohman and Regan Pittman each hit .583 and .438, respectively, and provided nine and seven kills.
Samedy also led the Gophers with 11 digs for the double-double. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 48 assists in the win. As a team, Minnesota hit .333 to Iowa's .248 and held a 55-42 kill advantage.
Minnesota travels to Wisconsin on Wednesday, Oct. 4. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start and televised on Big Ten Network.
Set Breakdown:
First Set: Tied at 22-22, the Gophers closed out the set for a 25-23 win. Minnesota took a 10-8 lead off a Lohman kill. After Iowa tied the set at 11, the Gophers took a 15-13 lead, which forced Iowa to call a timeout. The two teams tied again at 16 before Iowa took a 17-16 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. The two teams continued to trade points through the 22-22 point. The Gophers, however, finished off the set with a kill by Samedy, a kill by Martin and another kill from Seliger-Swenson to take the first set and go up, 1-0.
Second Set: Minnesota hit .410 in the second set en route to a 25-22 set win. Despite an 8-4 Iowa lead, the Gophers erased the deficit and tied the set at 12-12. Minnesota later took a 14-12 lead off a kill from Pittman, but Iowa tied up the set at 16-16 off a Gopher attack error. Minnesota went up 19-17 off a Martin kill as Iowa called a timeout. Minnesota built a 23-19 lead as Iowa called its second timeout of the set. Minnesota finished off the set with a Hart kill for a 2-0 lead.
Third Set: Iowa took an 8-5 lead, but the Gophers battled back and tied the set at 13-13. Minnesota took an 18-15 lead off a Hart kill, which caused Iowa to call a timeout. Samedy pushed the set to a 20-17 lead off a kill, while back-to-back blocks for a 22-17 lead and an Iowa timeout. Minnesota, however, pushed the set to 24-18 on a kill from Lohman and match point off a Samedy kill for a 3-0 win.
