Rookies Impress in First Collegiate Outing

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota hosted the Oz Memorial meet on Friday night at Les Bolstad Golf Course, and four first-year Gopher Cross Country athletes ran as unattached competitors with a pair placing in the top 15 on the four-mile course.
Kyle Burdick, a junior from South Dakota State, took home top honors on the day and helped lead the Jackrabbits to a championship finish with 35 points compared to second-place Drake University's 51.
Rookie Hunter Lucas ran sixth with an official time of 20:39.4, missing the top-five by just nine-tenths of a second. Patrick Roos finished 12th overall not even 30 seconds behind Lucas at 21:02.3. Jordan MacIntosh ranked in the top-50 with a time of 21:47.3 to finish 39th while Joe Morrison ranked 53rd with a time of 22:23.3.
"We only competed freshman red-shirts today because we ran everybody last week at Indiana to get a look at the Big Ten course," head coach Steve Plasencia said after the race. "In cross country, you don't run back-to-back weeks because it's not the best long-term for the guys. So, the guys that did run -- Hunter Lucas in his first time, not in a Gopher jersey but running unattached, did a very nice job. Patrick Roos also had a pretty good race. I'm happy for those guys to get a start."
The Gophers will return to the Bolstad course in just two weeks as the Maroon & Gold hosts the 32nd Annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 23. The all-day event will be streamed live on FloTrack.
