Final Results
The No. 4 University of Minnesota Gophers opened the 2018 season with a second place finish at the Windy City Invitational. They scored 401.400 led by an 81.250 all-around title from Shane Wiskus.
No. 3 Illinois took first at the invitational with a 404.300. Iowa came in third with a 393.200 and UIC rounded out the night with a 356.800.
"Our rivalry with Illinois got that much stronger tonight when they edged us out for the team title," head coach Mike Burns said. "We weren't quite as sharp as I would have liked to have seen us at our first meet of the year but we did have some outstanding individual results."
Yaroslav Pochinka won the vault title for the second year in a row at the Windy City with a 14.600. Wiskus took the floor title with a 14.150. In his first competitive meet Wiskus won the all-around with an 81.250. Tristan Duran took second in the all-around with an 80.950. Shaun Herzog took ninth in the all-around with a 74.400.
"Tonight Illinois beat us but we will have another shot at them when they come to Minnesota next month for a dual meet," Burns said. "We'll have to put a little more work in between now and then if we want to even things up this year with a very good Illinois squad."
