Larry Wieczorek Invitational Results (Day One) | UST Invitational Meet Results

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The No. 13 Golden Gophers dominated the weight throw led by event champion Kaitlyn Long while Val Larson led the collegiate athletes in the 600m premier race to kick off competition on day one at Iowa's Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday.

Long won the weight throw with a throw of 21.70m (71-02.50), setting a new meet and facility record at the Iowa Recreation Building. Agnes Esser (20.22m, 66-04.25) placed fourth followed by Nayoka Clunis (career-best 20.21m, 66-03.75) in fifth and Nina Horvath (19.17m, 62-10.75) in sixth. Temi Ogunrinde placed eighth (18.07m, 59-03.50) as the Gophers picked up 24 points in the team standings in the event.

On the track, Larson topped the 600m premier field in 1:32.65, good for second overall behind Nike runner Courtney Okolo (1:28.54) but picking up 10 points in the collegiate team competition. Erin Huls placed fifth in 1:34.42 as well.

Karlie Place set her second-consecutive indoor career-best mark in the pole vault, clearing 4.00m (13-01.50) to finish as runner-up and snag eight points for the Gophers. Place's performance also moved her into sole possession of seventh on Minnesota's all-time list.

Through seven scored events, Minnesota has 51.33 points, good for second behind host Iowa with 52.33 points. Kansas State (37.33), Wisconsin (31.50), and LSU (31) round out the top five teams at the nine-team meet.

Day one action also saw the Gophers compete in event finals in high jump, where Heta Tuuri cleared 1.75m (5-08.75) for fourth place and Taylor Wiebke (1.70m, 5-07.00) tied for eighth place, and the long jump, where Lorean Murray led Minnesota in 12th overall (5.43m, 17-09.75). On the track, Emerald Egwim finished 12th in the 200m premier race in 24.55 seconds.

Competition at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational continues all day Saturday. The first event for the Gophers is the shot put at 1 p.m. CT.

Members of the team also competed locally at the UST Invitational hosted by the University of St. Thomas on Friday evening. Allison Dugan (400m), Lindsey Greenlund (800m), Molly Eastman (3,000m), Sofie Albrechtsen (high jump), and Macy Narr (pole vault) won their respective events while competing in uniform. Meanwhile, unattached Gophers Molly Roach (600m), Olivia Hummel (mile) and Tess Keyzers (shot put and weight throw) also took home event titles.
