Gophers Finish Second at Iowa Meet

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The No. 13 Golden Gopher women's track & field team wrapped up day two of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational hosted by the University of Iowa with a second-place team finish behind scoring finishes in five different events on the second and final day of the competition on Saturday.

Titania Markland finished second overall in the 800m but picked up 10 points in the team race as the top collegiate runner. She ran a career-best time of 2:08.47 to move into eighth on Minnesota's all-time list. Meanwhile, Abby Kohut-Jackson also clocked a career-best time, finishing sixth in 2:14.09.

Along with 14 points in the 800m, Minnesota picked up another 14 points in the shot put behind scoring finishes from Kiley Sabin and Nayoka Clunis in third and fourth place, respectively. Sabin threw 15.94m (52-03.75) while Clunis recorded a mark of 15.89m (52-01.75).

The No. 13 Gophers scored 98.33 points to finish second in the team standings behind No. 7 LSU with 114 points. Minnesota finished ahead of host Iowa (93.33), Florida State (77), and No. 18 Kansas State (58.33) to round out the top five teams. Arizona (47.50), No. 11 Wisconsin (41.50), No. 14 Iowa State (37), and Virginia (36) rounded out the nine-team meet.

Other day two scoring finishes on the track saw Elyse Prescott finish fifth in the 3,000m in a career-best 9:48.84 and earn four points for the team race while Emma Spagnola finished sixth in the 60m hurdles in her 2018 debut, clocking a time of 8.45 seconds and securing two points in the team standings.

Lorean Murray placed sixth in the triple jump to grab four points for the Gophers with a mark of 11.90m (39-00.50).

Minnesota wrapped up the day with a runner-up finish in the 4x400m relay as the team of Rachel Schow, Emerald Egwim, Brieasha Hobbs, and Markland ran 3:38.99, second to the event champion Hawkeyes in 3:37.37. The Gopher quartet posted the sixth-best time in program history.

Kaitlyn Long, weight throw champion, was named the Outstanding Female Field Event Athlete of the meet for her performance on day one of the meet. Long won the weight throw with a throw of 21.70m (71-02.50), setting a new meet and facility record at the Iowa Recreation Building.

Along with Long's event title, day one of the meet also saw Val Larson lead the collegiate field in the 600m and Karlie Place finish as pole vault runner-up to lead the Gophers.

Minnesota returns home to host the Jack Johnson Classic next Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan. 27 at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
