Place Leads Gophers at Jack Johnson Classic

MINNEAPOLIS - Senior Karlie Place won the pole vault with the best mark in the Big Ten Conference so far this season, and Sofie Albrechtsen placed third in the pentathlon as the Golden Gopher women's track & field team hosted day one of this weekend's Jack Johnson Classic Friday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
Place cleared 4.28m (14-00.50) to win pole vault, marking her fourth PR performance in as many meets as a Gopher. She moved into third among all-time Gopher pole vaulters and improved on her previous indoor career best of 4.00m (13-01.50), set just last weekend at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational. Her performance also bested her outdoor PR of 4.06m (13-03.75) set during the 2016 season.
The pentathlon was also held on day one of the Jack Johnson Classic. Albrechtsen led Minnesota with a third-place finish with 3,789 points in her 2018 pentathlon debut. Ayesha Champagnie (3,711) and Ashley Ramacher (3,662) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Champagnie's score was her highest as a Gopher, moving her into seventh on Minnesota's all-time list while Ramacher recorded a career-high to move into 10th in program history.
Albrechtsen's top performances on the day included tying for first in pentathlon high jump at 1.70m (5-07.00). She also finished second in the shot put with a throw of 13.23m (43-05.00) and was third in pentathlon long jump (5.29m, 17-04.25) on the way to her third place overall showing.
Champagnie won the pentathlon shot put with a career-best throw of 14.68m (48-02.00). She also took third in the pentathlon 60m hurdles in 8.80 seconds. Meanwhile, Ramacher tied for first in pentathlon high jump (1.70m, 5-07.00), placed second in the pentathlon 60m hurdles in a career-best 8.71 seconds, and finished fourth in the pentathlon shot put with a career-best mark of 10.16m (33-04.00).
Behind Place's winning leap in pole vault, Lexi Kiefer placed fourth with a career-best mark of 3.93m (12-10.75) to move into sole possession of ninth place on Minnesota's all-time list.
The Jack Johnson Classic resumes at 10 a.m. CT Saturday at the Minnesota Fieldhouse.
