Peters Shuts Out Mavericks on Senior Night

MINNEAPOLIS - Senior Sidney Peters earned a 32-save shutout and fellow senior Cara Piazza scored the game-winner late in the second period to lead the No. 7 Minnesota women's hockey team to a 2-0 win over Minnesota State in front of 2,456 fans at Ridder Arena Saturday evening.
Minnesota (19-8-2, 12-6-2-0 WCHA) honored its four seniors, Peters, Piazza, Sydney Baldwin, and Caitlin Reilly as part of its annual Senior Day prior to Saturday's game, which marked the Gophers' final home game of the regular season. Appropriately, it was the seniors who led the Gophers to victory.
Along with Piazza's game-winner, Minnesota received a late goal from sophomore Alex Woken to seal the victory. Peters earned her third shutout of the season and improved to 12-6-1 on the year. Reilly picked up an assist on Piazza's game-winner as well.

It took nearly 37 minutes before either team could break through with a goal, but Piazza broke the scoreless tie at the 16:58 mark of the middle frame when she scored her eighth goal of the season off assists from Nicole Schammel and Reilly. Reilly fed Schammel, who worked the puck out of the corner along the end line and found Piazza in the slot where she one-timed it past Minnesota State netminder Chloe Crosby to put the Gophers up 1-0.
Woken then doubled the Gophers' lead when she snuck her own rebound past Crosby with just 1:42 remaining in the game. Olivia Knowles found Grace Zumwinkle in the corner, and she worked the puck back up to the top of the slot and made a pass to Woken at the faceoff dot, where Woken ripped a shot and tapped in her own rebound on her backhand.
Neither team scored on the power play as Minnesota went 0-for-3 while holding Minnesota State (3-22-1, 1-17-0 WCHA) scoreless on two opportunities with the player advantage. The Mavericks' penalty kill included holding off the Gophers on a five-minute major early in the second period.
Minnesota had a 38-32 advantage in shots on goal, and MSU's Crosby finished with 36 saves while Peters had a perfect 32 saves.
"I love these girls, and I love hockey," Peters said after the game when asked to reflect on her Senior Day. "I'm really going to miss hockey, but it's all about the girls for me right now."
The Gophers have two regular-season series remaining. The team is back on the road next weekend, traveling to St. Cloud, Minn., for a series with the Huskies. Puck drop is set for 3:07 p.m. CT both Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3.
