MINNEAPOLIS - Alex Woken scored two goals and Taylor Wente and Sydney Baldwin each had two points as the No. 6 University of Minnesota women's hockey team skated to a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Whitecaps in an exhibition game at Ridder Arena Friday night.

Minnesota (15-5-2, 10-4-2-0 WCHA) led 3-0 after the opening period, but the Whitecaps made it a one-goal game in the second period. Woken then scored back-to-back goals late in the middle frame to give Minnesota the three-goal lead, and the teams played a scoreless third period.

Along with Woken's two-goal effort, Wente tallied one goal and one assist and Baldwin had two helpers to lead Minnesota. Olivia Knowles and Cara Piazza also scored for the Maroon & Gold. Sidney Peters and Alex Gulstene split time in net with Peters making 14 saves on 16 shots before Gulstene made nine saves over the last 29:29 of the game. Minnesota outshot the Whitecaps, 38-25.

The Whitecaps received goals from Minnesota alum Kate Schipper and Minnesota State alum Lauren Barnes. Goaltender Julie Friend, a St. Cloud State alum, made 33 saves.

The WCHA's top power-play unit went 1-for-2 with the skater advantage while holing the Whitecaps to 0-for-2 on the power play.

Minnesota returns to NCAA action with three games next week, beginning with a non-conference game against St. Cloud State on Tuesday, Jan.9. The Gophers and Huskies face off at 6 p.m. CT at Ridder Arena before Minnesota welcomes Vermont to Minneapolis for a non-conference series next Friday, Jan. 12 and Saturday, Jan. 13.
