Gophers Add Another Sweep as Seliger-Swenson Surpasses 5,000 Career Assists

The No. 3 University of Minnesota added another 3-0 conference sweep when it defeated Northwestern, tonight at Maturi Pavilion. Minnesota defeated the Wildcats, 25-12, 25-22, 25-19. With the win, the Golden Gophers improve to 14-2 overall and 8-0 in Big Ten Conference.
Regan Pittman and Adanna Rollins both had 11 kills. Pittman also hit a team-best .500 on the night when she had 11 kills, two errors and 18 attempts. Stephanie Samedy had 10 kills in 24 attempts (.417), while Taylor Morgan had seven (.400). CC McGraw added a match-best 16 digs. Samedy and Morgan each had six blocks, while Pittman contributed five.
Samantha Seliger-Swenson contributed a match-best 40 assists. Her 40 assists also surpassed the 5,000 career assist mark. The NCAA career active leader, Seliger-Swenson sits fifth in school history with 5,011 career assists.
As a team, Minnesota had 12 blocks to Northwestern's three. The Gophers also held a 46-34 kill lead and outdug the Wildcats, 51-49.
Minnesota continues its home stand next weekend when it faces Iowa and No. 5 Nebraska. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. The Minnesota/Iowa match is on BTN Plus, while the Minnesota/Nebraska match is televised on Big Ten Network.
Set 1: Minnesota hit .519 and had four blocks en route to a 25-12 set win. The Gophers opened the set with a 5-0 run as Northwestern called a timeout. As the Gophers built a 10-2 lead, the Wildcats burned their second timeout of the set. A Pittman kill later pushed the score to 14-5, while Morgan added her own at the 18-9 point. A Samedy kill put the Gophers up, 20-10. Pittman added Minnesota's 23rd and 24th points off kills, while a Wildcat service error gave Minnesota a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: The Gophers produced another four blocks as Minnesota took a 25-22 set win. After the two teams traded points through 13-13, the Gophers went on a 3-0 run as Northwestern called a timeout. The Gophers, however, added to the lead and built a 5-0 run, which forced the Wildcats called their second timeout at 18-13. Northwestern responded and later pulled within one as the Gophers held a 23-22 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. Minnesota, however, came out of the break with a Pittman kill, while a Northwestern attack error put the Gophers up, 2-0.

A Morgan kill pushed the lead to 14-8, which forced Northwestern to use its second timeout. The Gophers, however, continued to push the pace and later went up 19-14 on a Seliger-Swenson/Pittman block. Rollins put the match at set point with her 11th kill of the night, while Samedy helped the Gophers to a 3-0 win with a kill.
