No. 21 Gophers Take Seventh at Pre-Nats

Bethany Hasz led Minnesota in fifth place overall in Madison, Wis., on Saturday morning.
MADISON, Wis. -- Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz earned top-15 individual finishes to lead the No. 21 Golden Gopher women's cross country team to a seventh-place team showing in the Cardinal Race at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals at Zimmer Championship Course on Saturday morning.
Minnesota scored 260 points to place seventh in the 35-team field led by B. Hasz's fifth-place showing in 20:18.3. M. Hasz was 14th in 20:31.1, followed by Patty O'Brien (21:26.5) and Anastasia Korzenowski (21:27.4) in 74th and 75th, respectively, as the Gophers' third and fourth runners. Jaycie Thomsen ran 21:40.9 for 92nd place to round out Minnesota's scoring finishes while Molly Eastman (21:46.6) and Elyse Prescott (22:11.0) completed the top seven.
"It was really just a quality day all around," head coach Sarah Hopkins said. "Every race, we talk about taking a step forward and getting better from the last one, and I really thought from Boston to Griak to this one, we really took a step in the right direction and beat some really good teams. In terms of the national picture down the road, it's nice to get some wins over some quality teams, but at the end of the day we still have to run really well at the regional. We got some confidence from today and some points for the end result."
In the team standings, Arkansas won the title with 51 points ahead of runner-up Oregon (71 points). Indiana (166), BYU (175), and NC State (180) completed the top five teams while Portland (242) finished just ahead of Minnesota (260). Syracuse (269), Northern Arizona (293), and Colorado (325) rounded out the top-10 teams while Oregon senior Jessica Hull won the individual crown in 20:03.2.
"A top-ten finish in that field is a really good place to be," Hopkins said of Minnesota's seventh-place finish. "I think there were 20 ranked teams in the country there. To be seventh was really good; we had to beat some really good teams. Bethany and Megan ran great up front. For Bethany to be fifth in that field is really something, and Megan was right there for a while and wasn't that far off at the end.
"I really thought our three-four-five and even our six and seven were the best we've been all year today. We were more aggressive from the start and held our own, and we really didn't let the gaps get too big. We worked together much better with Anastasia and Patty and Molly and Jaycie -- those guys worked really well together, and that was really good to see because that group needs to always be moving forward."
The Gophers placed third in the unseeded section at Pre-Nationals as well, led by Olivia Hummel's 16th-place individual showing in 22:04.1. Michigan took the team title in the Gray 6K with 36 points, followed by BYU (71 points) and Minnesota (78).
Minnesota also raced at the Tori Neubauer Invitational in Ettrick, Wis., on Saturday. The Gophers placed sixth in the team standings with 211 points led by Haley Rasmussen (23:01.9) in 20th place, followed by Paige Peschel (23:24.6) and Kayla Baker (24:00.2).
Minnesota returns to action at Les Bolstad Course at 5:30 p.m. CT next Friday, Oct. 19 when the Gophers host Jack's Twilight Run. The open 6K race is open to the public, and online registration is available now. Participation in the race is $10; all proceeds from the race go toward the Jack Johnson Scholarship.
Jack's Run honors the late Minnesota equipment manager Jack Johnson. Johnson will always be a part of the Minnesota women's cross country and track programs. After serving as the Golden Gophers' equipment manager for over three decades, Johnson passed away in February 2006 after a battle with cancer.
