Under the Helmet: Kamal Martin
10/18/2018 10:56:00 AM | Football
Burnsville, Minn., native Kamal Martin has played in 31 games for the Gophers and has been a regular in the starting rotation the past two seasons. He has 81 career tackles including 9.5 for loss. We got to know him under the helmet this week:
Gopher Sports: How do you prepare for game day? What is your routine like?
Kamal Martin: In the morning I'll look over the game sheet. I'll pretty much stay silent. When we get to the locker room I'll just play music until it's game time. I just focus myself.
GS: Who is the strongest linebacker on the team?
KM: The strongest linebacker on the team would definitely be Bailey Schoenfelder, the guy's a freak.
GS: In what ways have you improved your game since last season?
KM: Definitely just working on the simple things like technique and watching film as much as I possibly can, just to get the upper hand on opponents.
GS: In high school you played quarterback and safety, how did those experiences help you excel as a linebacker?
KM: Offensive wise, I would say just say formation recognition. Defensive wise, the physicality.
GS: How have you balanced being a student and an athlete?
KM: A lot of time management, that's the first thing you need to learn when you get to college.
GS: What is your favorite part about the new football facility?
KM: I would say the indoor field.
GS: What has been your favorite and least favorite class you have taken at the U?
KM: My favorite class would be OUE freshman year. It's a break in class where you get to meet other athletes, other incoming freshmen. My least favorite class would probably be Nature in the City, just because we had to stand in the woods for four hours a day and get bitten by mosquitoes.
GS: What is one thing you can't live without?
KM: One thing I can't live without would be my Playstation.
GS: We've heard that you are a huge gamer, what are some of your go-to games?
KM: I would say Fortnite and Call of Duty.
GS: Some of the other guys say that you are one of the best Fortnite players on the team.
KM: There is some good competition on the team, but I haven't 1v1'd anybody so I can't say.
GS: What would you do if you won one million dollars today?
KM: I would invest it, put it into stocks and then take some out and probably give it to charity
GS: Would you use it to buy anything you've always wanted?
KM: I'd probably buy my mom a car or a house.
