No. 3 Minnesota Tops No. 5 Nebraska in Four

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-1 win over No. 5 Nebraska, tonight at Maturi Pavilion. After dropping the first set, 19-25, Minnesota won the next three, 25-23, 25-23, 25-18 for its second win over the Huskers this season. With the victory, the Gophers improve to 16-2 overall and remain undefeated in the conference with a 10-0 record. With tonight's loss, Nebraska drops to 15-5 overall and 6-4 in the Big Ten.
Adanna Rollins set a new career-high, posting 20 kills and hit .404 (20-1-47) and added a double-double with 14 digs. Stephanie Samedy posted 13 kills and 10 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Alexis Hart and Regan Pittman each chipped in nine kills a piece. Samantha Seliger-Swenson also posted a double-double with 47 assists and 13 digs. Taylor Morgan finished with a team-best five blocks. In the back row, both Lauren Barnes (19 digs) and CC McGraw (18 digs) set new career-records in digs.
As a team, the Gophers hit .253 to Nebraska's .210, although Nebraska held a 62-56 kill advantage. Both teams posted 77 digs, but Minnesota held an 8-4 lead in blocks.
The Golden Gophers hit the road as they take on Michigan State and No. 13 Michigan, next Friday and Saturday night. Friday's match will be televised on the Big Ten Network at 5 p.m.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: Minnesota hit just .098 as Nebraska won the first, 25-19. Tied at 8-8, Nebraska went on a 5-1 run to go up, 13-9 as Minnesota called a timeout. As the Gophers pulled within two at 12-14, Nebraska went up four at 16-12 off a kill. A Nebraska block put the Huskers up by five as Minnesota called another timeout. The Gophers pulled within three at 17-20 off a pair of Nebraska attacking errors as the Huskers called a timeout. As the Gophers pulled within two at 18-20, Nebraska put the set back to five-point lead at 23-18. Samedy added a kill for Minnesota's 19th point, but Nebraska finished off the set with a kill and a block to take a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: The Gophers hit .268 to Nebraska's .167 to win, 25-23. Tied at 4-4, Minnesota went on a 6-1 run and held a 10-5 lead. Nebraska called a timeout at 9-5, but Minnesota forced an attack error at 10-5. The Gophers continued to add the pressure as Pittman added an ace at 13-7. After a block from Morgan and Hart at the 16-8 point, Nebraska called its second timeout. Nebraska went on a four-point run to cut the Gopher lead to 16-12 as Minnesota called its first timeout. The Huskers shortened the Gopher lead to two at 16-14 and 18-16. As the Huskers pulled within one at 20-19, Minnesota called its second timeout of the set. Nebraska, however, tied the set at 20-20 off a tip and later took a 21-20 lead off a kill. As the two teams traded points through 23-23, Minnesota received a crucial block from Morgan and Samedy, while Nebraska had an attack error as the Gophers won the second set and tied the match, 1-1.
Set 3: The Gophers took a 2-1 lead after another 25-23 set win. Minnesota opened the third set with a 7-1 run. Nebraska battled back and cut the lead to two at 10-8, but the Gophers delivered a block from Samedy and Morgan. Nebraska, however, tied the set at 14-14 off a kill. The two teams traded points through 18-18 before Minnesota went on a three-point run at 21-18, two kills from Rollins and a Nebraska attack error, as the Huskers called a timeout. The Huskers came out of the break and pulled within one as Minnesota called a timeout. The Huskers, however, tied up the set on a block at 21-21. Minnesota later took a 24-22 lead off a Pittman kill, but Nebraska had a kill to put it at 24-23, which forced Minnesota to call a timeout. The Gophers, however, closed out the set with a Hart kill, from Samedy, to go up, 2-1.
Set 4: Minnesota closed out the match hitting .577 when it had 16 kills in 26 attempts and just one error. The Gophers also had three aces. Tied at 14-14, Minnesota took an 18-15 lead off a Barnes ace. Samedy pushed the score to 20-16 as Nebraska called a timeout. The Gophers, however, continued to add two more on a Rollins kill and McGraw ace at 22-16. The ace caused Nebraska to call a timeout, but the Gophers were able to put away the match with a Samedy kill at 23-17, a Rollins kill at 24 and a Pittman kill to close out the match. It wasn't until her 45th attempt that Rollins committed an error in the match.
