Gophers Earn Road Sweep at Michigan State

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball team earned a 3-0 win over Michigan State, 25-22, 25-23, 25-15, tonight in East Lansing, Mich. With the win, the Gophers are now 11-0 in the Big Ten and 17-2 overall. MSU drops to 15-9 overall and 3-8 in league action.
Minnesota was led by the trio of Alexis Hart, Regan Pittman and Stephanie Samedy as they all had double-digit kills. Hart had a match-best 12 kills, followed by Pittman with 11 (hit .667) and Samedy chipped in 10. Taylor Morgan had eight kills, hit .368 and added four blocks. Samantha Seliger-Swenson had 39 assists, two aces, a block and five digs. CC McGraw had a team-best 15 digs, while Lauren Barnes added four digs and a match-best three aces.
As a team, the Gophers hit .311 to MSU's .196. Minnesota had 45 kills, 45 digs and six blocks. MSU had 39 kills, 38 digs and two blocks.
The Gophers conclude weekend action when they travel to No. 12 Michigan, tomorrow night. Match time is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers and Spartans went through nine ties and three lead changes before the Gophers won the set, 25-22. Minnesota erased an early 2-5 deficit to come back and tie the set at 8-8 off a Hart kill. Minnesota later took a 13-10 lead and a 15-11 advantage off a Samedy kill. MSU responded out of the media timeout and tied that set at 15-15. Minnesota later took a timeout as the Spartans held a 19-18 lead. Hart delivered a kill for a 22-21 lead as MSU called a timeout. Michigan State committed two errors as the Gophers closed out the set and took a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: The Gophers rallied from a 12-17 deficit to come back and win the second set, 25-23. Minnesota fell behind 4-0 as the Gophers called a timeout. Minnesota cut the MSU lead to one at 6-7, but MSU later took a 14-8 lead. Samedy pulled the Gophers within three off back-to-back kills at 14-17 as MSU called a timeout. Minnesota, however, climbed all the way back to tie the set at 19-19 off a Rollins ace. The Gophers took a 21-20 lead off a Morgan kill as the Spartans called their second timeout of the set. The two teams tied again at 22-22 and 23-23 before Minnesota garnered back-to-back kills from Samedy to close out the set.

Minnesota, however, built a 12-9 lead off a Morgan solo block and the Spartans called a timeout after an attack error and a 13-9 Gopher lead. Barnes delivered two aces in her serve rotation to take a 16-9 lead. The Gophers went up 18-10 off a MSU attack error as the Spartans called their second timeout of the set. Minnesota, however, continued to pour on the pressure. After a solo block from Pittman at 20-12, Hart delivered a kill for match point. The Gophers finished off the match on another Hart kill for the win.
