Gophers Sweep No. 12 Michigan in Ann Arbor

The No. 3 University of Minnesota volleyball program earned a 3-0 sweep over the No. 12 Michigan Wolverines, tonight, in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Golden Gophers won, 27-25, 25-10, 25-20, and are now 18-2 overall and 12-0 in the Big Ten.
Minnesota hit .364 as a team and had a season-best 14 blocks. The Gophers also had 59 digs and 49 kills. The Gophers held Michigan to 37 kills as it hit just .150. The Wolverines also had 46 digs and did not have a block in the match.
The Gophers had a well-balanced attack of Taylor Morgan, Alexis Hart, Regan Pittman and Stephanie Samedy as they all had double-digit kills. Morgan had 13 kills (hit .632), Hart had 12 (hit .345), Samedy had 10 kills (hit .391) and PIttman had 10 (hit .500). Pittman also had a team-best eight blocks. CC McGraw added a career-best 24 digs. Samantha Seliger-Swenson contributed 40 assists and 10 digs for the double-double.
Minnesota is back in action next Wednesday when it travels to No. 7 Wisconsin. The Gophers and Badgers battle each other at 8 p.m., on Big Ten Network.
Set Breakdown
Set 1: In a back and forth battle, Minnesota added a 27-25 first set win. Tied 9-9, Minnesota went on a small run for a 12-9 lead, capped off by a Morgan kill. However, Michigan responded and later tied the set at 14-14 off a kill. Michigan took an 18-16 lead as Minnesota called a timeout. With the Gophers trailing 20-16, Minnesota rattled off three-straight as Michigan called a timeout. Minnesota tied it up at 20-20 and the two teams tied it up through the 25-25 point. Michigan was at set point twice as Minnesota tied it up. At 25-25, Samedy delivered a crucial ace to go up, 26-25 as Michigan called a timeout. The Gophers, however, subbed in Jasmyn Martin out of the break as she and Pittman added a block to win the set.
Set 2: The Gophers hit .462 and contributed six blocks to take the second set, 25-10. Minnesota took a 12-6 lead when Pittman added back-to-back kills, which forced Michigan to call its first timeout. Pittman followed with two blocks as the Wolverines burned their second timeout and a 15-6 Gopher lead. A kill from Hart put the Gophers up, 16-6, while a Seliger-Swenson/Morgan block put Minnesota up, 19-8. Samedy added kills for both of Minnesota's 21st, 23rd and set point. Pittman and Rollins added the Gophers' ninth both of the set for a 2-0 lead. Â
Set 3: Minnesota opened the third with an 11-5 lead as Michigan called a timeout. Leading 12-6, Morgan added back-to-back kills and a solo block for a 15-6 lead as the Wolverines called their second timeout of the set. Another Morgan kill pushed the Gopher lead to 17-8, while Hart added a line shot for an 18-11 lead. Minnesota reached its 20th point off another Morgan kill. A Samedy/Pittman block put the Gophers up, 22-17, and reached match point off a Michigan service error. The Gophers won off a Morgan kill to take the match, 3-0.
