Gophers Settle for Split with Buckeyes

No. 3 Minnesota fell 3-2 to No. 4 Ohio State at Ridder Arena on Saturday afternoon.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 3 University of Minnesota women's hockey team settled for a WCHA series split with No. 4 Ohio State as the Golden Gophers fell 3-2 in game two of this weekend's conference series at Ridder Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Minnesota (6-1-1, 4-1-1-0 WCHA) received goals from Nicole Schammel and Taylor Williamson, who scored her third goal of the series, and Sydney Scobee made 25 saves against the Buckeyes as the Gophers had a 42-27 advantage in shots on goal.
Ohio State (6-2-0, 3-1-0-0 WCHA) was led by Andrea Branedli's 40-save effort along with goals from Sophie Jaques, Emma Maltais, and Madison Field. Jincy Dunne led all players with two points on a pair of assists.
"Well, it was a really good hockey game here tonight; unfortunately not the result that we wanted, but again, I'm proud of our team and the fight that they had," head coach Brad Frost said. "I thought we just played a really good hockey game. Unfortunately, we came out on the wrong end of it. I wish any of those four posts we hit would have gone in, but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be tonight. I'm proud of our team, I'm proud of our effort, and we'll learn from it and move on."
Minnesota surrendered one goal in each period beginning when OSU got on the board first as Jaques scored her first career goal at the 5:15 mark of the opening period. Schammel evened the score at 1-1 with her third goal of the season when she worked her way through the slot and launched the puck past Braendli on her stick side, and the teams headed into the first intermission tied at one.
OSU regained the lead with a second-period power-play goal from Maltais at the 12:12 mark of the middle frame before Field pushed the score to 3-1 with 16:16 remaining in the game. Williamson brought Minnesota within one at 3-2 when she scored off a pass from Amy Potomak with 2:32 remaining, but the Gophers could not find the equalizer.
Minnesota was 0-for-4 on the power play while Ohio State went 1-for-2 with the skater advantage.
No. 3 Minnesota travels to No. 2 Wisconsin for the first Border Battle series of the season next weekend. The Gophers and Badgers face off at 2:07 p.m. CT Saturday, Oct. 27 and 2:07 p.m. CT Sunday, Oct. 28 at LaBahn Arena in Madison, Wis.
