BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Sophomore Joanne Free fired a 3-under par 69 to help the Minnesota women's golf team move up the leaderboard as the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown concluded Tuesday at Boulder City Golf Club. Minnesota finished the tournament and its fall season in 13th place (299-297-291ā887).
"For the most part, we hit the ball very well," said head coach Michele Redman. "We aren't scoring low wbecause we aren't making any putts. It's encouraging though, because once we start making putts it's going to be fun."
Free (77-73-69ā219) climbed 26 spots on the leaderboard with her round, which tied the 16th lowest in program history. She finished among a seven-way tie for 36th place, including two of her teammates in classmates Grace Kellar (71-75-73ā219) and Kate Lillie (76-71-72ā219).
Freshman Karen Zhang tied for 74th at 14-over par (75-78-77ā230) while senior Muyu Wu finished tied for 87th (80-79-79ā238).
Oregon State claimed the team title (280-278-280ā238) while Tulsa's Lorena Tseng (69-69-65ā203) earned medalist honors.
The Gophers will break from competition for the semester, resuming action in February when they face Michigan in a dual in Naples, Fla., on Saturday, Feb. 2.
