Minnesota Director of Track & Field Matt Bingle is pleased to announce the program's 2018-19 competition schedule.
MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota track & field program, under the direction of Matt Bingle, has announced its 2018-19 competition schedule. The Golden Gophers' upcoming campaign includes seven home meets, including three at the team's new outdoor track & field stadium.
"We're excited about the opportunity to have both genders travel together and support each other," Bingle said. "Through practice up until this point, we've seen a lot of good energy, and I'm excited for us to take that energy into a competition setting."
Members of the Gopher track & field team will kick off the 2019 indoor season at the South Dakota State Holiday Invite on Friday, Nov. 30 and Saturday, Dec. 1.
The team's indoor schedule includes 13 meets with 11 regular-season meets. Highlighting the indoor slate are three weeks of home meets, beginning with the Minnesota Open on Saturday, Jan. 12. The Jack Johnson Classic is Friday, Jan. 25 and Saturday, Jan. 26, followed by the Snowshoe Open (Feb. 15) and the Parents Day Invite (Feb. 16).
"In terms of our competition schedule, it's a little bit different this year," Bingle said. "When you look at our home meets indoors, we have the Jack Johnson Classic, which is typically our biggest meet that is named after long-time equipment manager Jack Johnson, who died an early death due to cancer. We start off with a smaller meet, the Minnesota Open, and then we have the Snowshoe Open, which is a men's meet that is kind-of a tune-up, and the Parents Day Invite, which is the same concept for the women, as we all get ready for the Big Ten meet."
Along with the Gophers' home meets, the indoor slate is highlighted by the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa (Jan. 18-19), the Power 5 Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich., (Feb. 1-2), and the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa (Feb. 8-9).
The Gophers are scheduled to compete in up to six different states during the indoor season in South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan, and Alabama.
The Big Ten Indoor Championship is set for Friday, Feb. 22 and Saturday, Feb. 23 hosted by Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich., before the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. (March 8-9).
The outdoor schedule begins with members of the team taking a spring break trip to Miami, Fla., for the University of Miami Hurricane Invitational (March 15-16) followed by the full team competing at the Stanford Invitational (March 29-30).
Highlighting the outdoor slate are three meets at the new University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium, which provides the Gophers the opportunity to compete outdoors on campus for the first time in over 15 years. Located in the heart of the new Athletes Village area, the facility will become synonymous with track & field excellence in the Midwest.
The Gophers' three home outdoor meets are the Minnesota Spring Open (April 13), the Minnesota Women's Twilight Meet (April 24), and the Minnesota Men's Twilight Meet (May 1).
"Outdoors, obviously, having a new facility is spectacular," Bingle said. "It's exciting, and it's a great setup for our teams. The highlight of the year obviously is the home meets. We have a high school meet on Friday, April 12 and then the next day we have our collegiate meet. It will be an exciting opportunity for the athletes to compete at home and open up that facility. It will be a special time.
"The other home meets that we have are April 24, which is a women's only meet, and May 1, which is a men's only meet," Bingle continued. "Those are final tune-ups for the season and the end of the year meets to see who's going to make that Big Ten Championship team."
In total, the outdoor season includes 10 weeks of competition, and the Gophers will compete in Florida, California, Minnesota, Arizona, North Carolina, Iowa, Louisiana, Iowa, and Texas. The Maroon & Gold will send its full team to the Stanford Invitational (March 29-30), University of Arizona Jim Click Shootout (April 4-6), and the Duke Invitational (April 19-20) during the outdoor season.
Iowa is serving as host of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, May 10-12, in Iowa City, Iowa. The NCAA West Prelim will be held in Sacramento, Calif., (May 23-25) with the NCAA Outdoor Championship to follow June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
"We're excited about the year and excited about competing," Bingle said. "As we get farther into the season here, we feel like we're getting to see what the athletes are capable of and we are really looking forward to the opportunity to compete."
